It's probably easiest to order them online. The books I mentioned are published by a Shanghai
publisher and you might not be able to find them easily in Beijing bookstores.

practical classical dictionary for everyday...

Very good explanation indeed, though I don't really agree with " So, using 那 for 哪 may reflect
an older usage which, as Adrian said, occasionally still crops up in materials from Taiwan or Hong
Kong....

How could I get better at tones?

I've come up with a mnemonic that might be useful to someone else.

Associate tones with world regions. For me, 1 is Norhern Europe, 2 is East Asia, 3 is
Mediterranean+Middle East, 4 is America. Then...

"No.1 God of Water Temple" in China

The Jidu Temple located at the ancient source of Jishui (now Henan's
Jiyuan) was constructed in 582AD and the resort for sacrificial ceremony
for the god of water by emperors in past dynasties. In 1948, Chairman Mao
Zedong ordered that the temple's gigantic ancient building cluster be
protected. In 2004, local government conducted a large-scale repair and
reconstruction project to the Jidu Temple. Now this "No.1 God of Water
Temple" in China, cited as a classical garden in north China, appeared in
a new look before the eyes of tourists. Pictured, there is only one pond
of clear water left beside the Jidu Temple at the ancient source of
Jishui.

BEIJING, July 26 - China's central bank Tuesday denied the possibility of
further yuan appreciation after it allowed the currency to rise 2 percent
in value against the US dollar a couple of days ago.
The 2 percent appreciation refers to an adjustment at the beginning of
reform on the yuan's exchange rate determination mechanism, a spokesman
for the People's Bank of China (PBoC) said.
"It does not mean that there will be further revaluation (of the yuan)
afterwards," the spokesman said in a "solemn statement".
It is an "important principle" for the yuan's reform to be conducted
"step by step", which refers to the gradual process in the reform of the
rate's determination mechanism, instead of its level, he acknowledged.
The spokesman said the 2 percent appreciation level was calculated out
"on a rational equilibrium".
The increase basically caters to the need of materializing the overall
balance in commodity and service trade as it was set in line with the
extent of surpluses and structural adjustment in China's foreign trade,
as well as the bearing capacity of domestic firms, he said.

Coal price likely to dip in second half

July 25 - Coal prices, after years of going up, are expected to drop
slightly in the second half of the year, said industry experts over the
weekend.
Petroleum prices, however, rose over the weekend in line with the rise of
oil prices on the world market.
Reasons for the possible fall in coal prices include increased production
and imports. Plus, more demand could be a factor since the nation's
tightened controls of its highly energy-dependent industrial sectors such
as steel and petrochemicals have taken effect, said Guo Yuntao, director
of the China Coal Industry Development Research Centre (CCIDR), speaking
at the China Coal Market Conference 2005 on Saturday.
China's demand for coal is projected to rise by some 150 million tons
this year, compared with an estimated annual increase of 200 million tons
in coal output for the same period, said Guo.
"The market situation shows coal supplies to date, especially for the
country's power generators, have seen a lot of improvement. The more
balanced supply and demand in the coal market is likely to result in
lower prices," Guo said.
According to statistics from the Shanxi Coal Industry Bureau, the average
coal price in major companies in the nation's largest coal-producing
province dropped 2.7 per cent to 292 yuan (36 USD) per ton in May
compared with the figure in April.
Furthermore, the country's tax policy change to encourage coal imports
while cutting exports has also enhanced the domestic coal supply.
China sold 36.4 million tons of coal overseas in the first half of the
year, a fall of 18 per cent year-on-year.
The government is introducing more market mechanisms to energy prices
such as coal and oil.

July 21 - Unocal's board of directors has endorsed a sweetened, 17
billion USD takeover bid from Chevron, rejecting a higher offer from a
Chinese oil firm, CNOOC.
The decision by Unocal's board late Tuesday could signal an end to the
CNOOC's bid for the Unocal Corp.
CNOOC Ltd., an affiliate of China National Offshore Oil Corp., has an
18.5 billion USD offer on the table for the El Segundo-based company.
In a joint statement with Chevron, Unocal's board urged stockholders late
Tuesday to accept the amended bid at a shareholders' meeting scheduled
for Aug. 10.
But a spokesman for China's third-largest oil company vowed early
Wednesday that CNOOC was not ready to drop out of the bidding war.

On July 18, a child was planting corn in Nalu Village, Luoxiu Town,
Xiangzhou County, Laibing City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. From
June 19 to 21, the village was hit by the most serious flood ever, which
ruined all rice crops in the village, turned fertile soil into sandy
land, and made it impossible to plant late rice. In order to guarantee

Gold edition of "The Art of War"

was issued in Hubei's Yichang City. The book is in the style of ancient
Chinese books, printed in 16 mo. with a total of 40 gold pages. The pages

requires six grams of gold. This gold edition of "The Art of War" has a
limited issue of 5,000 copies around the world and is priced at 19,600

July 7 - Communist party chief of Jiangsu Province, Li Yuanchao, has met
with chairman of the New Party in Taiwan, Yok Mu-ming, in the provincial
capital of Nanjing.
Li Yuanchao hailed the New Party's adherence to the one China policy and
said the party's mainland tour will be conducive to cross-Straits
communication and cooperation.
Yok Mu-ming said it is indisputable that people from the mainland and
Taiwan are of the same origin.
Nanjing is the second stop of the New Party Delegation's mainland visit,
where they will pay tribute to the Mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen,
forerunner of China's democratic revolution.

On July 4th, 2005, competition in Jinan division of the City Beauties
Pageant 2005 jointly sponsored by ten cities was concluded. Contestant
No. 1 Lou Hong was crowned the champion. Lou and other two award-winning
contestants were chosen to represent Jinan in the City Beauties Pageant
2005 held in Jiuzhaigou and Guangzhou. Initiated in 1988, the pageant was
one of the most influential programs created by GZTV and other provincial
capitals, and is one of the earliest model contests in China.

Apr.30 - China and Kenya signed a series of agreements in Nairobi on
Friday, including one that allows a Chinese oil producer to search for
oil in the east African nation.
Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao and Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki
witnessed the signing of the oil exploration agreement between Kenya and
China National Offshore Oil Corporation(CNOOC).
In a statement posted on its website Friday, CNOOC Limited announced that
its subsidiary, CNOOC Africa Limited has signed production sharing
contracts (PSCs) for six blocks in Kenya located in three basins of Lamu,
Anza and Mandera, with a total area of 115,343 square kilometers.
Media reports say these areas are located in the north and south of
Kenya, which produces no oil but has attracted foreign companies
searching for possible reserves.
"If they discover oil we will go into production sharing agreements,"
Kenya's acting energy minister Henry Obwocha told Reuters, saying Chinese
exploration would start soon. The exploration agreement covers 20 years,
he said, giving no financial value for the deal.
The CNOOC statement says the exploration period of the PSCs will be
divided into three phases and the company will take on an amount of work
commitment during the period.
CNOOC says signing of these six PSCs indicates it has successfully
extended its overseas exploration activities to East Africa. It says this
vast area has attractive untapped exploration potential, although it is
not yet a mature oil and gas producing area.
Zhu Mingcai, Vice President of the Company and General Manager of CNOOC
International Limited said, ��Growing exploration acreages are important
for E&P companies. I believe that our presence in Kenya will be a
significant step in pursuit of that target.��
The oil exploration deal and other agreements were signed as President Hu
Jintao paid a two-day state visit to Kenya, the last stop of his
five-nation tour. He has already been to the United States, Saudi Arabia,
Morocco and Nigeria.
Other bilateral co-operation documents signed cover economic links,
trade, culture and education.
Trade between China and Kenya is growing rapidly. Bilateral trade volume
was US$475 million last year, up 29.7 per cent year on year, according to
statistics from the General Administration of Customs.
During talks with his counterpart Mwai Kibaki, Hu said China sees Kenya
as an important partner in Africa.
He proposed that high-level contact should be maintained between the two
countries.
He added that they should increase trade and investment, and expand their
partnership in such fields as culture, education, health, tourism, media,
environmental protection and sports.
Kibaki agreed, saying that Kenya will maintain the traditional friendship
with China and deepen co-operation. He hoped China would continue to
support the realization of peace, stability and development in east
Africa.
Analysts say co-operation with China has given Africa a bigger role in
the world economy, displacing what many Africans call an unequal and
debilitating relationship with Europe that has dominated the continent
from the slave trade era to the present.
"China's investment in Africa has created a lot of job opportunities and
boosted regional development," Kenyan Government spokesman Alfred Mutua
told Xinhua.
He added: "While providing reliable and good-quality technology, China
never attaches economic and technical aid to politics."
Co-operation in tourism has also made great strides, with the number of
Chinese people visiting Kenya going up all the time. A total of 11,000
Chinese tourists visited Kenya in 2005, the year after China made Kenya
one of its tourist destinations.
Meanwhile, the third session of the China-Kenya Joint Trade Committee was
held on Friday during Hu's visit.
The meeting was hosted by Bo Xilai, China's minister of commerce, and
Kenyan Minister of Trade and Industry Mukhisa Kituyi.
Kituyi stated that in order to boost bilateral trade and the economic
relationship, the Kenyan Government announced it would recognize the
market economy status of China.
Bo said the decision demonstrated the resolve of Kenya to pursue fair and
equitable trade, and reaffirmed the friendship between the two countries.

benefits" for urbanites receiving allowances for minimum living

is learnt that patients receiving treatment in the special sickroom can

Chinanews, March 30 - Shanghai would build a seaside new town with its
area nearing 300 square kilometers and its population setting 800,000 on
the bank of Hangzhou Bay 32 km away from the Yangshan Deep Water Port,
Vice Mayor of Shanghai Yang Xiong stated on Mar. 29.
The town was temporarily named "new town beside the port". It is learnt
that the construction of this new town will cost 36 billion RMB (US$4.44
billion) of fixed asset investment, and the overall framework will come
into being by 2010.

Iraq to buy US$1bln worth of goods in Shanghai

Chinanews, Mar. 28 - The Iraq Investment and Reconstruction Task Force
consisting of 50-odd merchants arrived in Shanghai on the afternoon of
Mar. 27th to attend a large-scale sourcing conference held by Shanghai
International Merchandising Center Co., Ltd. A spokesman of the Iraqi
Chamber of Commerce disclosed that the estimated consumption volume of
these merchants would exceed US$1 billion.
This sourcing conference would be open in Shanghai Mart on March 28th and
last 3 days. Though these 50-odd merchants come from 10 different
countries, all of them are Iraqi and want to make some contributions to
their own country's reconstruction, revealed Dr. Saffar with the Iraqi
Chamber of Commerce.
Dr. Saffar said frankly that they had made deep considerations on
economic and other factors before coming to China for purchasing. "We can
buy everything here." said Dr. Saffar. China produces high, medium and
low-end products; therefore there is much room to choose products with
different price levels. Chinese products with high quality and low price
are a big attraction for Iraq, a developing country that needs full-scale
reconstruction.
"Different buyers have different considerations," said Dr. Saffar, "but
as for building materials for roads and bridges, vehicles and industrial
facilities, we would choose high-quality ones without doubt for the
infrastructure counts for much and can be used for ages." He added that
Iraq is a country that needs to be completely rebuilt. With large sums of
aids from the international community, the reconstruction task force will
procure at least US$1 billion worth of goods in Shanghai.

Hangzhou Bay Transoceanic Bridge under construction

Hangzhou Bay Transoceanic Bridge has a total length of 36 kilometers,
longer than many world-famous bridges such as the Chesapeake Bay Bridge
in the US and the Baharian Causeway in Saudi Arabia, becoming the longest
transoceanic bridge among all cross-sea bridges that have completed
construction or are under construction in the world. This bridge shortens
the journey between Ningbo City and Shanghai by more than 120 kilometers.
It will make far-reaching and important influence on the economic and
social development in the Yangtze River Delta region. The bridge started
construction in 2003 and is predicted to be completed in 2008.

Sci-tech Park in the Suzhou Hi &New Tech Industrial Development Zone, has
spent over a decade in cultivating 1,000-odd trees featuring Olympic
rings. At present, he is applying for a trademark of "trees of Olympic
rings" for camphor trees featuring Olympic rings. He plans to send a
group of such trees to Beijing when the 2008 Olympics opens so that
people will understand Olympic spirits embodied by way of gardening.

Guangxi culture and relics expo in Beijing

The National Museum of China and Guangxi Museum will jointly hold the
"assembly of Xi'ou & Luoyue heritages -- Guangxi Baiyue exquisite culture
and relics expo" in Beijing's National Museum of China from March 15 to
June 15. This expo will display 135 pieces (groups) of cultural relics in
three sections -- the light of ancient Xi'ou and Luoyue people, the
extraordinary splendor of diversified culture, and integration of Han and
Yue people. The first group of visitors to this expo appreciated the

10 million waste recycling workers in China

Chinanews, March 10 - According to a related survey, China is presently
home to over 10 million waste recycling workers, most of whom are devoid
of licenses, legal sites of business and professional training.
With development of the market economy, especially after China abolished
special trade licenses for waste recycling enterprises in 2002 and
implemented a preferential taxation policy for this industry, lowered
threshold enabled many small enterprises and self-employed persons to
take up waste recycling businesses regardless of qualification and
conditions.

March 1 - Spending on education is expected to take up a record 4 per
cent of China's gross domestic product (GDP) during the coming five
years, a cabinet official said yesterday.
In addition to increasing funds to guarantee compulsory education, the
country will lay stress on vocational training for its massive rural
migrant labour, Minister of Education Zhou Ji told a briefing held by the
State Council Information Office in Beijing.
"Indeed, China's current expenditure on education, at 2.79 per cent of
GDP, is not very high," Zhou said. "From this year on, the ratio of
education spending will edge up steadily and appreciably."
While the budget is yet to be endorsed by the National People's Congress,
which convenes for its annual session on Sunday, the government has
proposed to apportion at least 218.2 billion yuan (US$26.94 billion) in
the 2006-10 period to ensure every child in rural areas can enjoy nine
years of compulsory education, Zhou said.
China implemented the Compulsory Education Law 20 years ago. Last year,
primary school attendance hit 99.15 per cent, while the gross enrolment
for junior high schools stood at 95 per cent, an increase of 6 percentage
points from 2000, the ministry's statistics show.
But largely because of poverty, the drop-out rate among students under
compulsory education was as high as 5 per cent in the rural areas of
seven provinces in central and western China in 2004, compared with
nearly zero in large- and medium-sized cities, according to ministry
sources.
To redress the disparity, the central authorities have decided to scrap
tuition and other fees for primary and junior high school students in
western provinces from the spring semester. The exemption will be
extended to central and eastern provinces by 2007, Zhou said.
To further narrow the educational gap between rural and urban areas, a
key solution is to improve the quality of teachers in the countryside,
the minister said.
Aside from giving incentives such as higher pay, the Compulsory Education
Law, which is being revised, is expected to make it mandatory for urban
teachers to teach for some time in rural areas before they can be
promoted, Zhou said.
The minister said China's future economic development hinges on the
improvement of skills and quality of its workforce.
"China has a huge population of 1.3 billion, which will be a heavy burden
(to economic growth) if this population is poorly qualified; but if
highly qualified, the population will deliver a tremendous
human-resources advantage," Zhou said.
Vocational education for rural migrant workers will be a priority, as
they have already become the main force driving the growth of a host of
industries in China, he said.
Already 140 million farmers have migrated to urban areas to seek their
fortunes, and another 100 million are on the waiting list, according to
Zhou.
The ministries of agriculture, labour and finance are launching several
national projects to help train the one-time farmers.
They include a training programme for workers urgently needed for modern
industry and the services sector, plus a project specially designed to
train farmers before and after they move to work in cities, the minister
said.
Other highlights of the press conference:
A campaign launched by the government to curb unreasonable school
charges, which are rampant in parts of the country, has resulted in the
dismissal of 794 school masters since 2003;
China had 23 million students in its institutions of higher learning by
the end of 2005, the year graduates numbered a record high of 3.38
million;
By 2004, citizens aged 15 and above had received 8.3 years of schooling
on average;
The number of people learning Chinese in other countries and regions has
exceeded 30 million.

93 farmers from 25 underdeveloped regions of Zhejiang Province (95 were
accepted actually but two gave up because of joining the army) stepped
into Zhejiang Forestry University and became regular university students
in this school for two years of education and a junior college diploma.
They are the first group of farmer university students in the province.
Starting from 2006, Zhejiang will provide adult education with academic
credentials for youths, who are under an age of 25, have received senior
high school education and are engaged in agricultural and forestry
production, from needy rural households.

Feb. 11 - Mix in some song, dance and a squealing Ferrari, and cap it off
with some opera. That's amore �� for the Turin Olympics.
It was a mutual love affair between the Italian hosts �� known for their
flair for the dramatic �� and their visitors from around the world at
Friday's opening ceremony.
It started the moment the Olympic torch arrived, carried by skiing hero
Alberto "La Bomba" Tomba, who ran up the stage steps and handed it off to
a succession of Italian medal winners.
Ultimately it was Stefania Belmondo, a two-time gold medal winner in
cross-country skiing, who touched the flame to a wire that ignited
fireworks and lit the Olympic caldron in what was a spectacular eruption.
The cheering crowd screamed its delight �� just one of the many times it
did so throughout the three-hour show, though perhaps never more than
when a fire-engine red Ferrari spun in furious doughnuts, sending smoke
wafting through the air and leaving a streak of black rubber in a jumble
of circles.
But it wasn't truly over until the big man sang.
Luciano Pavarotti performed "Nessun Dorma," ("Let No One Sleep"), from
Puccini's "Turandot," an aria that the tenor has turned into a signature
piece.
While that closing number sent spectators home happy, it was the parade
of nations that really got the party going.
More than 2,500 athletes arrived to the accompaniment of chest-thumping
disco ranging from "YMCA" by the Village People to "I Will Survive," by
Gloria Gaynor.
Italy, as host country, entered last and brought down the house. Dressed
in fur-trimmed coats, against the pulsating, popular Italian pop song
"Una Donna Per Amico" ("A Woman For a Friend"), the crowd jumped to its
feet, and shouted while ringing souvenir cow bells provided by show
organizers.
"Hopefully after such a show Turin will no longer be seen as a drab city,
where you only go to sleep early and go to work in the morning," said
entrepreneur Domenica Devietti Goggia. "We also know how to have fun."
Second only to the audience's reaction to Italy was the roaring welcome
given to the Americans. Around the packed stadium, fans stood and clapped
as "Daddy Cool" blared through loudspeakers.
More than 200 U.S. athletes, wearing white coats and hats of blue and
red, waved and blew kisses. Giant video screens showed a smiling first
lady Laura Bush.
In an unusual security move, three plain-clothed guards followed the
Danish team as it marched through �� a precaution that responded to
recent violence by Muslims enraged at derogatory cartoons of the Prophet
Muhammad published in Danish newspapers.
Security was also tight for the arrival of the first lady and Cherie
Blair, wife of British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
"Rhythm, Passion and Speed," promised the show's producers, and those
watching �� an estimated 35,000 at the Olympic Stadium and 2 billion
tuning in �� got all of that.
The program opened with Yuri Chechi, one of Italy's most famous gymnasts,
swinging a mighty hammer onto a giant anvil that sparked tall flames.
Rollerbladers in red body suits zoomed across the stage, two-foot flames
shooting out the back of their heads.
Next came a tribute to the seven countries abutting the majestic Alps ��
including Austria, Germany and France. Dancers wearing green sheaths
pranced near brightly painted fake cows pulled on rollers. It was a
homage to mountain life and livestock, and to cheer both, the stadium
audience was supplied with the cow bells.
More modern-day were the Federico Fellini-inspired clowns, acrobats and
high-wire acts.
In what executive producer Marco Balich described as an "iconic moment,"
silver-clad dancers appeared with big, white bubbles stuck to their
heads. Balich, who has staged concert shows for U2 and the Rolling
Stones, said the balls signified snow, of which there is none in Turin.
This northwest city, home to both Fiat and Savoy-era mansions, has
exhibited a certain ambivalence to the Winter Games, largely because of
an ever-changing pattern of traffic detours and street closures. The
weather, hovering in the high 30s and low 40s this week, melted more than
a foot and a half of recent snow and prompted officials in the mountain
venues to churn out the man-made kind.
For the first time, eight women carried the Olympic flag: Italian actress
Sophia Loren, Chilean writer Isabel Allende, American actress Susan
Sarandon, Nobel Peace-prize winner Wangari Maathai of Kenya, and three
Olympic medal winners. They were Nawal El Moutawakel of Morocco, Manuela
Di Centa of Italy, and Maria Mutola of Mozambique. The eighth was
Cambodian human rights activist Somaly Mam.
Behind the scenes, 6,100 volunteers helped stage the event, for which
they had practiced an estimated 10,000 hours.

Chinanews, Feb. 8 - Horizon Research and Horizonkey, a professional
research data provider, jointly released the 2005 survey report on
Chinese residents' life quality index the other day. Results show that
spending on education is the crucial cause giving rise to poverty in
rural families and "lack of knowledge and skills" is one of the causes
leading to low income of rural residents.
The survey indicates that 40% to 50% of poverty-stricken people in
cities, small towns and rural areas said that they are poor because they
find it hard to afford their children's tuition fees. In rural
households, in particular, spending on education is the No. 1 expenditure.
The survey also shows that from October, 2004 to October, 2005, spending
on education accounted for 32.6% of the total income of those rural
households with children of school age. This proportion reached 25.9% and
23.3%, respectively, in cities and small towns.
The No. 2 burden for the needy is medical expense, and the situation is
even more severe in rural regions. About 25% of poor rural residents
attribute their poverty to sick members in their families. From October,
2004 to October, 2005, medial expenses constituted 21% of the total
income of rural households, remarkably higher than the proportions in
cities (7.9%) and small cities (9%). Statistics from the Development
Research Center under the State Council also indicate that in current
China, once a person was seriously sick, he should spend over 7,000 yuan
(US$868) on medial treatment on average. However, the annual net income
of farmers is normally around 2,000 yuan.
Moreover, about 14% of poverty-stricken residents in cities and small
towns said that their poverty is due to the elderly they must support.

BEIJING, Jan. 31 - China has experienced a stable growth in its domestic
oil and gas supplies over the last five years, according to the National
Development and Reform Commission(NDRC).
Statistics show that China's crude oil output increased from 165 million
tons in 2000 to 183 million tons in 2005, and the output of natural gas
rose from 27 billion cubic meters to 47.5 billion cubic meters.
New breakthroughs in oil and gas exploration were made in the past five
years as the traditional oil fields in East China, such as Daqing,
maintained a steady growth.
Oil fields capable of producing high yields were discovered in west China
including Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Ningxia HuiAutonomous Region,
and Qinghai, Gansu and Shaanxi provinces, and in offshore China's Bohai
Bay.
Between 2000 and 2005, six large-scale natural gas zones were discovered
in the Tarim, Ordos, Sichuan and Qaidam basins, in the South China Sea
and in the East China Sea.
Petroleum and natural gas began to play bigger roles in China's energy
consumption structure.
In 2000, 16.6 percent of China's energy demand was met by petroleum, in
2005 it was 22.7 percent. Consumption of natural gasrose from 2.1 percent
in 2000 to 2.6 percent in 2005.
China strengthened infrastructure during this period to support the
soaring oil and gas demand of the country.
The great pipeline carrying natural gas from China's energy-rich West to
the energy-thirsty East was completed at the end of 2004.
By the end of the following year, China had built up a basic pipeline
network for natural gas stretching 24,000 kilometers, with 20,000
kilometers for oil products.
Between 2000 and 2005, China amended relevant regulations for closer
cooperation with foreign partners.
By the end of 2005, China had signed a total of more than 200 contracts
with foreign petroleum partners, attracting foreign capital of over 9.3
billion U.S. dollars and boasting contracted acreage of over 1.05 million
square kilometers.

Zhejiang juvenile writers training center set up the Wenling base in
Xinhe Town Middle School on Jan. 10, 2006. This is the first base
established in a junior high school of the province by the training
center. Wang Xufeng (right), Maodun Literature Award winner and president
of Zhejiang writers' association, showed up at the opening ceremony and
delivered a speech to the students and teachers.

Ring watch attracted female customers

In an accessory boutique in Jinan, a shop assistant was displaying a type
of ring watch on Jan. 10th. The ring has a head about one third the size
of an ordinary watch and an elastic watch band. The unique style of this

Xingxinggang (star harbor) special fund for charity and care, a fund
aiming to help parents who have lost their children "overcome the
hardship and help themselves and others," was launched in Shanghai on

BEIJING, Jan.7 - China's population and family planning minister said
here on Friday that China will work to limit its mainland population
below 1.37 billion by 2010.
Zhang Weiqing, minister in charge of the National Population and Family
Planning Commission, stressed that China will keep its family planning
policy in place to maintain a low birth level.
"But demographically speaking, China will face another upsurge of
population growth in the coming five years, and China's first
single-child generation is about to enter reproductive age then, which
make it all the more difficult to maintain a low birth level in the
coming years," said Zhang.
Statistics from the commission show that China's population has been
brought under control in the past 5 years, with birth rate and natural
growth rate dropped from 14.03 per thousand to 12.29 per thousand and
7.58 per thousand to 5.87 per thousand respectively.
According to data released by commission, given China failed to implement
the family planning policy, China's population would be nearly 400
million more than the present figure.
Zhang said China will continue to improve its legal system on population
in an effort to work out laws and regulations to manage unbalanced sex
ratio at birth.
Government figures show 119 boys are born for every 100 girls in the
world's most populous nation. About 40 million men may live as frustrated
bachelors by 2020.
