Children's paradise for holidays

A few pupils in Suzhou's Canglang District were studying and playing
games in the "Service Center for New Suzhou Citizens" on Jan. 23rd, 2006.
In order to enable the children from the families of new Suzhou residents
spending the Chinese New Year in the city to enjoy a meaningful winter
vacation, Suzhou's "Service Center for New Suzhou Citizens" opened its
exercise room, reading room and science room to the children and these
rooms become their paradise for holidays. The children have a good time
here while their parents do not have to worry about their children's
activities in holidays.

A festive lantern team composed of farmers and a dragon lantern team
consisting of retired urban workers were performing at the annual temple
fair held on Jan. 9th in the lunar calendar on Langya Mountain in Chuzhou
City. Langya Mountain was covered with a timely snow during this temple
fair which made it extremely fascinating. Tourists who came to
participate in the temple fair were feasted not only on the folk-custom
artistic performance but also on the beautiful snow scene that was rare
to see in previous temple fairs.

Domestic oil, gas supplies grow steadily

www.chinanews.cn 2006-01-31 13:15:10

(Source: Xinhua)

BEIJING, Jan. 31 - China has experienced a stable growth in its domestic
oil and gas supplies over the last five years, according to the National
Development and Reform Commission(NDRC).
Statistics show that China's crude oil output increased from 165 million
tons in 2000 to 183 million tons in 2005, and the output of natural gas
rose from 27 billion cubic meters to 47.5 billion cubic meters.
New breakthroughs in oil and gas exploration were made in the past five
years as the traditional oil fields in East China, such as Daqing,
maintained a steady growth.
Oil fields capable of producing high yields were discovered in west China
including Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Ningxia HuiAutonomous Region,
and Qinghai, Gansu and Shaanxi provinces, and in offshore China's Bohai
Bay.
Between 2000 and 2005, six large-scale natural gas zones were discovered
in the Tarim, Ordos, Sichuan and Qaidam basins, in the South China Sea
and in the East China Sea.
Petroleum and natural gas began to play bigger roles in China's energy
consumption structure.
In 2000, 16.6 percent of China's energy demand was met by petroleum, in
2005 it was 22.7 percent. Consumption of natural gasrose from 2.1 percent
in 2000 to 2.6 percent in 2005.
China strengthened infrastructure during this period to support the
soaring oil and gas demand of the country.
The great pipeline carrying natural gas from China's energy-rich West to
the energy-thirsty East was completed at the end of 2004.
By the end of the following year, China had built up a basic pipeline
network for natural gas stretching 24,000 kilometers, with 20,000
kilometers for oil products.
Between 2000 and 2005, China amended relevant regulations for closer
cooperation with foreign partners.
By the end of 2005, China had signed a total of more than 200 contracts
with foreign petroleum partners, attracting foreign capital of over 9.3
billion U.S. dollars and boasting contracted acreage of over 1.05 million
square kilometers.

China to keep population below 1.37b

www.chinanews.cn 2006-01-07 16:58:17

(Source: Xinhuanet)

BEIJING, Jan.7 - China's population and family planning minister said
here on Friday that China will work to limit its mainland population
below 1.37 billion by 2010.
Zhang Weiqing, minister in charge of the National Population and Family
Planning Commission, stressed that China will keep its family planning
policy in place to maintain a low birth level.
"But demographically speaking, China will face another upsurge of
population growth in the coming five years, and China's first
single-child generation is about to enter reproductive age then, which
make it all the more difficult to maintain a low birth level in the
coming years," said Zhang.
Statistics from the commission show that China's population has been
brought under control in the past 5 years, with birth rate and natural
growth rate dropped from 14.03 per thousand to 12.29 per thousand and
7.58 per thousand to 5.87 per thousand respectively.
According to data released by commission, given China failed to implement
the family planning policy, China's population would be nearly 400
million more than the present figure.
Zhang said China will continue to improve its legal system on population
in an effort to work out laws and regulations to manage unbalanced sex
ratio at birth.
Government figures show 119 boys are born for every 100 girls in the
world's most populous nation. About 40 million men may live as frustrated
bachelors by 2020.

74-year-old Chen Hongxue looked helplessly at the New Year wood blocks,
which are about to turn into waste wood, on Dec. 14. With more than 300
years of experience in producing woodcut New Year pictures, Shawo Village
at Shengli Township of Linyi City's Tancheng County has been cited as the
No. 1 village of woodcut New Year pictures in southern Shandong Province.
However, the vibrant scene of producing woodcut New Year pictures cannot
be seen this year. Affected by offset printing, woodcut New Year pictures
could hardly sell, and the villagers have stopped woodcut New Year
picture production for several years.

RMB appreciated by 0.4% since July

www.chinanews.cn 2005-12-07 15:36:17

Chinanews, Dec. 7 - After several days of fluctuations around 8.0800:1,
RMB-USD exchange rate broke the 8.0800:1 mark and reached a new high of
8.0780:1 Tuesday, up 0.4% since the July 21 currency regime reform. On
that day, RMB-USD exchange rate fluctuated between 8.0800:1 and 8.0780:1,
up 0.03% over the closing rate on Monday.
Prior to this, RMB-USD exchange rate reached a historical record of
8.0796:1 on Nov. 29. On July 21, China took the world by surprise and
adjusted the RMB-USD exchange rate to 8.11:1.
Domestic media quoted a Chinese official Tuesday that the 3% limit of
RMB-USD exchange rate fluctuation per day is reasonable. Future RMB
exchange rate adjustment will be pushed forward by economic factors but
not the government. The report ruled out possibility of a second RMB
currency regime reform.
CITIC futures researcher Wang Yuanhao pointed out that the recent
appreciation of RMB versus USD is actually far slower than that of RMB
against JPY. Since this year, JPY-USD exchange rate fell about 17%.
RMB-JPY exchange rate closed at 7.3105:100 on July 21 and 6.6780:100
yesterday, an increase of 8.65%.
According to Wang, there is almost no suspense regarding the trend of RMB
exchange rate currently. Appreciation is unavoidable, but the speed is
quite low. Yesterday, the quota for one-year-term RMB-USD non-deliverable
forward was 7.7650 yuan, higher than Monday's closing quota of 7.7570
yuan.
