Musharraf to 'quit as army chief'

Updated: 2007-09-18 07:24

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf plans to quit as army chief to
become a civilian leader, removing a main objection to his proposed
re-election in October, a senior ruling party official said yesterday.

"We expect that after his re-election process next month, God willing,
General Musharraf would take his oath of office as a civilian president
before November 15," said Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed,
secretary-general of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML).

Musharraf retained the post of army chief after he took power in a
military coup in 1999, despite calls from the opposition to quit the dual
office.

His acquiescence could be seen as a victory for Benazir Bhutto, who has
said that any power-sharing arrangement with Musharraf would depend,
among other things, on him becoming a civilian president.

Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party announced on Friday the two-time former
prime minister would return to Pakistan on October 18, ending more than
eight years of self-exile.

Giving up the army role would undoubtedly dilute Musharraf's power in a
country that has been ruled by generals for more than half the 60 years
since it was founded.

It will also be a wrench for a life-long soldier who described his
uniform as a "second skin". But aides say Musharraf has been reconciled
to quitting the army for months.

Senator Sayed said Musharraf would abide by the constitution and quit the
army before the end of 2007. Musharraf's term as president expires on
November 15.

"Yes, I have no doubt that the president will keep his commitment," said
Sayed, who recently met Musharraf.

"He is clear on this issue."

Before quitting the army, Musharraf planned to seek another five-year
term as president from the sitting parliament by October 15, Sayed said.
A general election is due by mid-January.

The PML and its allies have a majority in parliament, but several members
of the ruling coalition have reservations about voting Musharraf another
term while he remains in uniform.

But Pakistan's Election Commission yesterday said it has changed a rule
so that a key article of the constitution no longer applies to Musharraf
- apparently allowing him to seek a new five-year term as president while
still serving as army chief.

"The chief election commissioner of Pakistan has made the requisite
amendment, with the approval of the president," the commission said in a
statement.

Time running out for Bhutto, Musharraf to reach deal

Time running out for Bhutto, Musharraf to reach deal

Updated: 2007-09-14 07:13

Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf has little time left to seal
a pact with former premier Benazir Bhutto that a senior official said
yesterday was vital to stop Pakistan's slide into political crisis.

Underlining the parallel threat from Islamic militancy, officials said up
to 30 insurgents and 10 soldiers died in fighting near the Afghan border,
just as a senior US official visited Pakistan to discuss efforts against
the Taliban and Al-Qaida.

Musharraf, a key Washington ally, has been trying for months to secure an
agreement with Bhutto that would allow her to return from exile and help
him get another term. But with the presidential election due in less than
five weeks, the two sides have yet to resolve key differences on how they
might share power.

"The ball is in the court of the government, and the time has almost
completely run out," said Farhatullah Babar, spokesman for Bhutto's
Pakistan People's Party. "The window is not completely shut, but no
agreement has been reached."

The warning follows an attempt by another former prime minister, Nawaz
Sharif, to return to Pakistan and challenge Musharraf, whose authority
has eroded since March when he tried unsuccessfully to oust the Supreme
Court's top judge. A pact with Bhutto could help Musharraf overcome
expected legal challenges to another run.

Bhutto wants authorities to drop corruption cases pending against her and
insists Musharraf must step down as army chief. However, Musharraf's
political allies are resisting her demands and want him to retain much of
his sweeping powers.

Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said the main sticking-point
was Bhutto's demand for the repeal of a bar on anyone serving more than
twice as prime minister. Bhutto led two short-lived governments in the
1990s and has said she would like to become prime minister again.

The president's army role was no obstacle, Ahmed said on Geo television.
He urged Bhutto to agree to a compromise to avoid "a new crisis" in
Pakistan.

Babar said that Bhutto, who left Pakistan in 1999 over corruption
allegations, will return "irrespective of what the regime does" and that
her party will announce her arrival date today.

Abe ready to quit if fuel mission cancelled

Abe ready to quit if fuel mission cancelled

Updated: 2007-09-10 06:55

Embattled Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said yesterday he would not
cling to his job if he could not extend his country's naval mission in
support of US-led operations in Afghanistan, vital to Tokyo's ties with
Washington.

Opposition parties, which won control of the upper house of parliament in
a July election, can delay enactment of a bill to extend the mission
beyond its November 1 expiry.

Abe said he would do all he could to extend the mission, but indicated
that he could resign if the mission to refuel coalition ships were to end.

"I have no intention of sticking to my duties (as prime minister)," Abe
told a news conference in Sydney.

Financial markets have been rattled by worries over political stability
following a slew of scandals in Abe's Cabinet, and the bill to extend the
Afghan mission has become the prime focus of a session of parliament
starting today.

Earlier yesterday, Tadamori Oshima, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party
lawmaker in charge of parliamentary affairs, told broadcaster NHK the
party was considering submitting a new bill to extend the law in a bid to
win the support of the main opposition Democratic Party.

Abe said he wanted to meet soon with Democratic Party leader Ichiro Ozawa
to discuss the naval mission.

Ozawa has said he opposes the refuelling mission because the US-led
operations do not have the direct imprimatur of the United Nations.

"We will not make a groundless compromise," NHK quoted the Democratic
Party's No 2, Yukio Hatoyama, as saying. "If he says he is staking his
job, all we can do is ask him to resign."

In a recent public opinion poll, 53 percent of respondents were against
extending the Afghan mission, while 35 percent supported it.

Tarantino lets go of gentlemanly ways

Tarantino lets go of gentlemanly ways

(AFP)
Updated: 2007-08-03 10:03

?

Quentin Tarantino

"One of the things I've always been rather proud of about me as a
director and especially my handling of women is, I've always been a
gentleman," the 44-year-old "Pulp Fiction" director said.

But in his latest film, inspired by the 1960s B-rated or so-called

"grindhouse" movies, Tarantino laughed that he "sent the gentleman home."

"You don't want to see a grindhouse movie made by a gentleman. You want
to see it through the eyes of somebody who's turned on by his women and
who finds them sexy and is presenting them in what he considers the
sexiest way possible," he said.

"Death Proof" tells the story of two sultry women who unleash vengeance
on serial killer Stuntman Mike, played by Kurt Russell. The film also
pays tribute to the 1970 Dodge Challenger, a car iconic of US
counterculture.

Tarantino, wearing an orange shirt with images of the cars, warned his
audience that his perception of sexiness could be different from theirs.

"You would all have slightly different versions of what you find sexy.
But it ain't your movie," he said, wagging his finger at the audience and
laughing.

"It's my movie. It's my job to help you see it through my eyes."

Tarantino has featured many empowered gun-and-sword-wielding women in his
movies, from "Jackie Brown" to "Kill Bill."

He said his portrayal of women came from being raised by a single mother.

"I was always raised more or less to believe that there is nothing a man
can do that a woman can't do."

Fighting family violence for gender equality

/ Page 5

Fighting family violence for gender equality
By Chen Jia
Updated: 2007-07-16 07:01

A young woman drops in at a government social relief shelter with her
child, begging not for money, but for food. The experienced staff,
trained in handling domestic violence cases, see the fear in her eyes and
are quick to detect the inconsistencies in her statements. Thanks to
their patience and persistent but sympathetic questioning, out comes a
sad tale.

That happened a year ago in a town in East China's Shandong Province.
Today, the woman, surnamed Dong, works as a translator in Xuzhou in East
China's Jiangsu Province. She is proficient both in Russian and Korean.
And most importantly, she is free - from her husband's regular beatings
and the constant fear she used to live in. Her main concern now is to
give her child the good life that it deserves.

How did this miracle come about? After listening to her tale of torture,
the employees of the Shandong social relief shelter, part of a pilot
national network for domestic violence victims, contacted their
colleagues in Xuzhou. They made all the necessary arrangements for Dong's
rehabilitation there, giving her a chance to start life anew.

The two shelters in the neighboring provinces are blazing a new trail in
protecting the rights of women and children. According to Xuzhou
Anti-Domestic Violence Shelter program chief Ma Li, their "pioneering"
work is part of an ongoing national program. What's more, the Ministry of
Civil Affairs (MCA) is considering introducing the domestic violence
intervention scheme in 1,200 social relief shelters across the country.

A woman throws punches at a rubber boxing dummy, with the words "family
violence" marked on its chest, at a catharsis club in Chongqing. The
facility serves exclusively for women battling depression and family
violence.     Tang Ming

Government social relief shelters usually offer those seeking help -most
of them beggars - a few free meals, a few nights' free lodging and a free
train ticket back home. But victims of severe domestic violence - most of
whom are women and children - need not have to return home. And since
they are likely to continue living in fear in shelters in their home
towns, they are shifted to other places.

In the past 15 months, the Xuzhou shelter has received 196 woman victims,
and the employees have helped four of them find jobs and start a new life
in another city. Apart from providing lodging and medical care, the
shelter also offers psychological counseling and legal help to the
victims.

Sometimes providing a free ticket back home is like depriving them of the
chance to learn to deal with domestic violence, Ma said on Friday on the
sidelines of a forum supported by the United Nations Development Fund for
Women.

This is just the first step in a noble mission, he said. "So many women
are in need of help." A survey sponsored by All China Women's Federation
revealed violence was part of about 35 percent of the 270 million
families in China, with most of the victims being women. The nature and
severity of the violence varies, though.

Also, surveys conducted in different places in the past two years have
shown that at least 20 percent of divorce cases stem from family violence.

Xuzhou's pilot program is funded jointly by the MCA and China Gender
Facility, set up in 2004 to meet the UN's millennium development goals
(MDGs) and reduce gender inequality in the country. Initiated by the UN
Theme Group on Gender (UNTGG), the China Gender Facility comprises UN,
multilateral and bilateral development agencies and international NGOs.

Since its launch, the program has provided funding for 16 pilot programs,
such as the one in Xuzhou. It has reviewed the condition of women
suffering from HIV/AIDS, migrant workers and senior citizens.

The innovative and catalytic projects aim to enhance awareness and
knowledge of the people and advocate policy change. "The size of the task
ahead of us is daunting," Constance Thomas, director/representative of
International Labor Organization and the UNTGG chair, said at Friday's
forum. According to UN Development Program, China is 81st on the list of
177 countries in the global Gender Development Index.

Participants at the forum were told that despite the past couple of
decades of high economic growth and significant progress in poverty
alleviation, gender disparity is still a problem in China. In fact, it's
a major "stumbling block" toward achieving the Millennium Development
Goals.

"But we gain courage and confidence from the valuable experiences and
good practices already achieved and the partnerships the UN has built
through the China Gender Facility," Thomas said.

Hopefully, the work being done by shelters like the ones in Shandong and
Jiangsu will be emulated across the country and build the momentum toward
achieving gender equality in China.

Paris Hilton's jail time investigated

Paris Hilton's jail time investigated

(AP)
Updated: 2007-07-14 09:52

Paris Hilton leaves the Los Angeles County Correctional Facility in
Lynwood, California, in this file photo from June 26, 2007. The Los
Angeles County Sheriff's Department has opened an investigation into
whether Hilton received special treatment during her 23 days in jail last
month, a spokesman for the department said on Friday.[AP]

LOS ANGELES - The Sheriff's Department opened an investigation Thursday
into allegations that Paris Hilton received special treatment during her
23 days in jail for violating probation in an alcohol-related reckless
driving case, authorities said.

The internal probe will examine whether the hotel heiress was given free
access to a cordless phone instead of being forced to wait in line to use
a pay phone at certain hours, sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

Also under scrutiny are claims Hilton received a new jail uniform instead
of the recycled ones given to many inmates and that her mail was
delivered by a captain instead of inmate trusties, Whitmore said.

The allegations were brought to the attention of the department's union,
the Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs, by its members, the Los
Angeles Times reported Thursday on its Web site.

Whitmore said the claims differ from the department's own information
about Hilton's incarceration.

"We're going to investigate it and get to the bottom of it and find out
exactly what happened," he said.

A message left with a Hilton spokesman late Thursday was not immediately
returned.

The department was also accused of granting Hilton special treatment when
Sheriff Lee Baca released the 26-year-old from jail after only three days
for medical reasons. She was sent back to jail after one night.

Hilary Duff on the cover of Us Weekly

Hilary Duff looks so good that she was chosen for the cover of Us
Weekly's first annual swimsuit issue. But when the singer/actress was 15,
she came across a press report criticizing her for her weight.

"t made me obsessed,"she tells Us of the story that drove her into a
hard-core diet and exercise binge. " would beat myself up if I had some
fat."

But when the 5-foot-2 star's weight plummeted to around 100 pounds in
2005 (down from 130 in 2003), her sister Haylie, 22, finally intervened.

"she said, Why are you being so strict with yourself?'It was like an
awakening," says Duff, who eased up on her rigorous program.

"I dont want to be so skinny that people are like, Oh my god, she's
lost a lot of weight."

Now, at 19, Duff tells Us that she's content at 109 pounds. "As you get
older, you just get more comfortable in your own skin."

Instead of counting fat grams or calories, she relies on a hearty helping
of common sense: lots of greens, lean protein and fresh fruit.

Court delays Richie's trial in DUI case

(AP)

'The Simple Life 5' in Los Angeles, in this file photo from April 9,
2007. [Reuters]

Nicole Richie's driving-under-the-influence trial was delayed Wednesday
until Aug. 16 so a defense expert can challenge evidence in the case.

Richie's lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, said in court that Dr. Terence
Sean McGee will testify about tests and conclusions by drug experts used
by prosecutors.

Holley told Superior Court Commissioner Steven K. Lubell that McGee's
testimony was critical to the defense, but he is unavailable to appear in
court until next month.

Richie, 25, was not in court for the brief hearing. Because she faces a
misdemeanor charge, the co-star of TV's "The Simple Life" was not
required to attend.

Allan Parachini, a spokesman for Los Angeles County Superior Court, said
Tuesday that Richie would have to decide whether to accept a plea deal
offered by prosecutors.

Terms of the deal were not made available and the district attorney's
office declined to comment.

Holley left court immediately after the hearing and was unavailable for
comment on a possible plea deal.

Richie was arrested early on Dec. 11 after witnesses reported seeing her
black 2005 Mercedes-Benz sport utility vehicle headed the wrong way on a
freeway in Burbank.

She allegedly failed a field sobriety test and authorities said she told
them she had smoked marijuana and taken a prescription painkiller. No
drugs were found on her or in the vehicle.

She pleaded not guilty in February to the DUI charge.

Sienna recalls bitter experience with journalists

(IANS)
Updated: 2007-07-11 15:17

Sienna Miller

Hollywood actress Sienna Miller says her latest film brought back bitter
memories of one of her first interviews when a reporter she invited home
for tea criticised her housekeeping skills.

Sienna plays the role of a TV star in her new film 'Interview', where she
plots against a political reporter whom she invites back to her apartment
after he is injured in an accident, contactmusic.com reported.

She says: 'I get into trouble with journalists who take advantage of my
honesty and openness. I invited someone back to my house for a cup of
tea, this woman, and then she sort of proceeded to write this article
about the state of my apartment and how messy it was... so that wasn't a
good starting point.

'That was one of my first interview experiences. I'm much more savvy now.
But it's hard to find a journalist who you know wouldn't mess you over
with the right scoop. So I personally don't tend to trust journalists
that much.'

Study: Women don't talk more than guys

(CRI)
Updated: 2007-07-10 15:40

Another stereotype?- chatty gals and taciturn guys - bites the dust.

Turns out, when you actually count the words, there isn't much difference
between the sexes when it comes to talking.

A team led by Matthias R. Mehl, an assistant professor of psychology at
the University of Arizona, came up with the finding, which is published
in Friday's issue of the journal Science.

The researchers placed microphones on 396 college students for periods
ranging from two to 10 days, sampled their conversations and calculated
how many words they used in the course of a day.

The score: Women, 16,215. Men, 15,669.

The difference: 546 words: "Not statistically significant," say the
researchers.

"What's a 500-word difference, compared with the 45,000-word difference
between the most and the least talkative persons" in the study, said Mehl.

Co-author James W. Pennebaker, chairman of the psychology department at
the University of Texas, said the researchers collected the recordings as
part of a larger project to understand how people are affected when they
talk about emotional experiences.

They were surprised when a magazine article asserted(宣称)that
women use an average of 20,000 words per day compared with 7,000 for men.
If there had been that big a difference, he thought, they should have
noticed it.

They found that the 20,000-7,000 figures have been used in popular books
and magazines for years. But they couldn't find any research supporting
them.

"Although many people believe the stereotypes of females as talkative and
males as reticent, there is no large-scale study that systematically has
recorded the natural conversations of large groups of people for extended
periods of time," Pennebaker said.

Underwater city? Don't hold your breath

ENTERTAINMENT / Hot Pot Column

Underwater city? Don't hold your breath

By Patrick Whitely (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-07-10 08:50

China's four great inventions (si da fa ming) are the compass, gunpowder,
moveable type printing press and paper. But I believe the committee who
voted on this list got it all wrong.

Why didn't anybody consider goldfish? In terms of all things good, gold
fish blow gunpowder out of the water. Imagine if the world's military
forces were armed with gold fish. End of argument!

Carassius auratus (gold fish) are marvelous, and I'm now enjoying
watching fish in my new tank. These little guys were developed during the
Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907) as the result of a freakish act of nature.

A silver carp, which had been decorating some rich guy's pond, hatched a
golden-orange colored nipper. The scientifically minded groundkeeper
separated it from the rest of the school and started a breeding program.
He's the guy that really found Nemo.

The Chinese are still hooked on pets, and I've jumped on the bandwagon.
Demanding dogs and fussy cats are not for me. I'm a Piscean and fish are
my forte.

I look at them, drift off into their watery world, forget about my recent
Chinese misunderstanding (No 342 at present) and really relax. Gold fish
gazing is a therapeutic way to unwind.

In return, I only have to feed the little blighters every second day,
make sure the air pump is working and turn off the tank light at night.

Owning a big fish tank has been one of my many life goals.

Before I die, I also want to speak understandable Chinese, make a musical
comedy featuring a banjo-playing samurai and learn how to a pull a rabbit
out of a hat (Where does the rabbit come from? I really need to know).

But my biggest desire has always been to build an underwater city.

China is a can-do place, and now I have achieved my goal. I wanted a real
one at first and consulted my engineering friend Da Chui (Big Hammer),
who designs off shore oilrigs. Taking into account the special rustproof
materials, labor costs, whiz-bang technology and finding available land
under the ocean, they all reckoned I'd get change from $40 billion. I
asked them what I could get for $400.

The advice was sound, and now I have an underwater city, filled with
fish, taking pride and place in my Beijing apartment. But as Jules Verne
discovered, an underwater city can have its social problems.

One of my gold fish (aka Da Chui) is not behaving and is picking on the
other fish. He is not following my underwater city's policy of a
harmonious society. He's also gone on a crazy building spree and is
digging a big crevice under this stone statue I erected, which clearly
says: "No unauthorized construction without a permit."

All the other fish - the silver dragons, the orange guppies and a really
cool blue one - tow the line, but Da Chui doesn't care about my rules. He
sucks up a mouthful of pebbles, swims away, then spews them out and has
created a neat little nook. It's obvious he's building a karaoke bar.
Watching all this activity is stressing me out again.

Maybe gunpowder was the more peaceful choice.

For a quick bite on-the-go, this little cafe offers a small but decent
selection of take-away salads, sandwiches and desserts. Lunch-goers
looking for a quick, fresh and healthy lunch can pick up pre-wrapped eats
such as the curry chicken marsala sandwich (RMB32) or the chicken bell
pepper empanada (RMB25). The sandwiches, which can be prepared hot upon
request, fare better than the meager salads (RMB30).

The highlight of this quaint eatery is the sumptuous selection of creamy
cheesecakes, flaky croissants and fresh baked focaccia. If you're popping
in for a bite, don't miss the C Cake, a scrumptious layered blend of
Oreos, cheesecake and chocolate mousse. Also offering a range of teas and
coffee drinks, this Wi-Fi cafe, decorated with modern pop-art wall
hangings, is a quiet and relaxing respite from the bustling business
lunch crowd. Perfect for: busy-bodies on the run.

Toni Collette announces she's pregnant

Live Earth concert in Sydney, Australia, Saturday, July 7, 2007. [AP]

Toni Collette had been leaning toward motherhood roles, and now she
thinks she knows why: The Oscar-nominated actress confirmed Monday that
she's pregnant.

It will be the first child for the 34-year-old Australian actress and her
musician husband, Dave Galafassi.

"We're very happy. We are completely over the moon," she said.

Collette was nominated for an Academy Award in the best supporting
actress category for her role in 1999's supernatural thriller "The Sixth
Sense," and her more recent roles include a mother in the dysfunctional
family comedy "Little Miss Sunshine."

"It is strange the last three films I've done I have been pregnant," said
Collette, who is currently in Sydney with her side project, a rock'n'roll
band that includes Galafass on drums. "I'm just like, what is the
universe trying to tell me?

"But I think everything happens when it's meant to," she said.

Collette and her band, the Finish, were among the acts that appeared
Saturday at the Sydney edition of Live Earth, the global concert series
that aimed to raise awareness about global warming.

Hilary Duff banned from buying a Porsche

Hilary Duff

?

Hilary Duff's business manager has refused to let her buy her dream - a
Porsche - as the singer-actress is not very good behind the wheel.

The 19-year-old revealed that the manager has banned her from buying the
car because he thinks she was a ‘terrible driver’.

"The car I want is a Porsche Cayenne Turbo. But my business manager
doesn't want me to buy it - he says that I'm a terrible driver and don't
need that kind of car,” Duff said.

The ‘Lizzie MCGuire Movie’ star, who had earlier admitted her poor
driving skills, insisted that she met with a ‘little accident’ once
as she was on phone, but the manager was very particular about her being
more careful.

"The other day I had a little accident because I was driving while I was
on the phone. It was just a tap, nothing serious, so I thought, I'll keep
going it's fine, whatever. But my business manager told me, 'You have to
be careful, because people will sue you.' So I need to be cautious,”
she said.

Earlier, Duff had revealed that her pals were scared to sit in the car
while she was on the driver’s seat.

“Everyone is scared to get in the car with me. My garage sometimes
jumps out at me,” she said.

Supervision needed

I think the Chinese government should also go after the local companies

They are not doing any good for the country or the people.

Comment on Hong Liang's column "Side effects of long-term economic trend"

Migrant workers still earn little, but contribute much. They are not the
ones driving up inflation.

Any rise in their average wages will have little impact on price

Change attitude

Comment on "High hopes for Beijing's bicycle rental scheme" (China Daily,
August 21)

It is good news that a new bicycle rental scheme will reinforce Beijing's
status as the capital of "Kingdom of Bikes". But more has to be done:

First, reduce the aggression car drivers show toward bicycle riders. It
is getting more and more dangerous to ride a bike in the city.

Second, we need a new attitude toward bicycles and bicycle riders in
China.

When one tries to park a bike outside a hotel, a department store or a
bank, security guards become hysterical and shout at riders to move on.

In modern China a bicycle seems to be a symbol of poverty and
backwardness. A new way of thinking is necessary.

Subprime rocks Shanghai boat

 Subprime rocks Shanghai boat
By Wang Lan
Updated: 2007-08-17 07:13

SHANGHAI: The Shanghai stock market fell 2.14 percent yesterday, led by
the financial large-caps, amid concerns about the US credit crisis
arising from the subprime mortgage woes.

Economists and analysts said investors' worries stemmed mainly from the
potential risks to China's economic growth caused by the possible
recession in US resulting from the credit problem, despite reassuring
words from US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson.

Reuters quoted him as saying the financial system and the US economy are
strong enough to withstand the current crisis without triggering a
recession.

"The concerns about the credit problems overhanging the global financial
markets have, to some extent, disrupted the Chinese stock market rally,"
said Zhu Gang, an analyst at Changjiang Securities.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index dropped 104.43 points, or 2.14
percent, to close at 4765.45, with 511 out of 998 stocks closing lower.
Turnover on the Shanghai bourse amounted to 129 billion yuan, down 2.4
percent from the last trading day.

Before yesterday, the benchmark index had held up well against what has
been described as a "gradual meltdown" of global equities. The main
indicator had risen an aggregate 2.5 percent to 4869.88 from last Friday,
when ripples of the credit squeeze in the US began to spread to European
and Asian markets.

"The market is conducting a short-term correction," said Zhang Fan, an
analyst at Changjiang Securities. "We expect it to resume the upward
trend when the impact of the US credit squeeze is digested."

The subprime issue is nothing more than an excuse for the overdue market
correction, the analysts said.

"As a relatively less open market, the subprime issue is not expected to
have as direct an impact on the Chinese equities market as other overseas
markets," said Zhu.

Analysts said global markets would probably take months to absorb the
subprime blow. But no substantial impact is expected on China's stock
market, they maintained.

Yesterday was also the day for most companies and institutions to pay pensions and salaries through the banking system; and many were subscribing to funds, which put the system under further stress, the notice said. All systems returned to normal later in the afternoon and ICBC apologizes for the inconvenience, the notice added. ICBC, China's largest commercial bank, had more than 2.41 million corporate banking clients and 170 million personal banking customers in 2006. Xinhua (China Daily 08/16/2007 page3) ? ? ENTERTAINMENT / Gossip Lindsay Lohan?a 'model patient' in rehab (WENN) Updated: 2007-08-13 19:46 Troubled actress Lindsay Lohan has been dubbed "a model patient" by insiders at the Utah rehab clinic she checked into earlier last month, despite claims to the contrary. In a U.s. TV exclusive which aired on Friday's Entertainment Tonight, a silhouetted former Cirque Lodge patient suggested the actress is getting celebrity treatment from carers and is difficult with staff. But TMZ.com claims the opposite is true, according to their sources. Insiders at the Oren, Utah clinic, considered one of the best rehabs in America, claim Lohan is taking her third counselling camp stint of 2007 very seriously, attending every meeting, working with psychologists and even agreeing to take on menial tasks she's handed. These include washing dishes and cleaning toilets. TMZ.com sources claim the woman who took her claims about Lohan to the media dropped out of a sister clinic "against medical advice" days after the actress checked herself in and would only have had access to her through meetings. ENTERTAINMENT / Gossip Lohan's ex bodyguard blames parents for her wild behaviour (WENN) Updated: 2007-08-10 09:22 Both of Lindsay Lohan's parents are responsible for her bad behaviour, according to the actress's longterm bodyguard Tont Almeida. Almeida, who worked for Lohan for three years until 2005, claims Dina and Michael Lohan failed to provide the 21-year-old with any structure - and kept her working to pay for their lifestyle. He tells In Touch magazine, "From a young age, she dealt with her father's physical, emotional and drug abuses as well as her mother's drinking." Almeida also claims he had to pull Michael off his daughter - then 16 - after he stopped the car he was driving "and dragged her out of the car, pushed her up against the hood, screamed at her and called her a slut." He adds that Dina frequently "let her do whatever she wanted, just to keep her happy and working. (At her 16th birthday party) Lindsay drank whatever she wanted - I saw her drinking beer and mixed drinks with my own eyes (without Dina's intervention)." He says, "Lindsay was the family cash cow - and she (Dina) resented it. They counted on her to pay their bills...I saw Lindsay exhausted, begging her mother for some time off." In the interview, Almeida goes on to claim Lohan's parents allowed her to sleep with ex-boyfriend Aaron Carter when she was 15 and he 14, and that he caught her sniffing white powder in a nightclub when she was 18. ?

Former Spice Girl Melanie Brown, who gave birth to Eddie Murphy's
daughter in April, married her boyfriend, Steven Belafonte, in June,
according to Clark County marriage records.

Murphy acknowledged his paternity of Brown's daughter, Angel, last week,
one day after the 32-year-old singer took legal action to establish him
as the parent.

Belafonte is a movie producer whose recent credits include "Sisters" and
"Thank You for Smoking." Brown was known as Scary Spice when she
performed with the Spice Girls, whom she'll join for the band's reunion
tour in December and January.

A marriage certificate filed with Clark County, which encompasses Las
Vegas, lists the date of the couple's nuptials as June 6. It does not
state exactly where they were married.

An email to Brown's publicist was not immediately returned.

Hollywood producers to make film about HIV medics

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-08-06 22:10

SOFIA?- Hollywood filmmakers hope to bring to the big screen the
eight-year ordeal of six foreign medics convicted of deliberately
injecting 460 Libyan children with the HIV virus.

Sixth Sense Productions Inc, which helped raise funding for
Oscar-nominated genocide drama "Hotel Rwanda," said the five Bulgarian
nurses and a Palestinian doctor had signed over their life rights for the
film project "The Benghazi Six."

The medics, who were sentenced to death, were freed on July 24 after the
European Union brokered a cooperation deal with Libya following years of
complex legal and political battles.

The medical workers have always maintained their innocence and said they
were tortured into confessing to intentionally starting an epidemic in
which hundreds of children were infected with the virus that causes AIDS
while working in Libya's second biggest city of Benghazi in 1998.

"The story of 'The Benghazi Six' is ... inspirational having the six
medics survive what they survived in prison throughout the years and
lived to see their freedom," said Sam Feuer, president of development and
production at Sixth Sense.

"The world needs to learn about this injustice. It's not just a Bulgarian
story, its a human story that the world will relate to and learn from,"
he told Reuters by email on Sunday.

The EU, which Bulgaria joined in January, and the United Sates had pushed
for the medic's release, pointing to evidence of torture and studies
showing the epidemic started before the nurses arrived at the Benghazi's
children hospital.

Although focused on the medics, the film will also show the tragedy of
the children infected with the virus, Feuer said. More than 50 of the
children have died.

Sixth Sense is in talks with Ann Peacock, who wrote the screenplay
adaptation of the children's fantasy blockbuster "The Chronicles of
Narnia," to write the script for the medics film, Feuer said. The company
is also interviewing directors.

"Hollywood stars will star in it. Our job is to develop the best script
possible that will attract them," said Feuer.

Sixth Sense producers will come to Sofia to meet the medics and their
families once the company lines up a screenwriter.

The medics said they were glad their ordeal might be shown one day on the
big screen.

"The world will see the truth. The world must see the truth. Such a case
doesn't happen every day," said Dr Zdravko Georgiev, husband of one of
the nurses. He was acquitted in the HIV case in 2004, but not allowed to
leave the country until last month.

The Bulgarian nurses and Georgiev left the relatively poor Balkan country
in the late 1990s to work in Libya where medical workers' salaries were
higher. Nineteen Bulgarian medics were detained in early 1999 and 13 were
later released.

Western scientists have said Libya's inefficient health-care system was
the real culprit for the HIV infection.

Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov pardoned the nurses and the
Palestinian doctor, who recently took Bulgarian citizenship, after they
arrived in Sofia two weeks ago.

The medics return to Bulgaria closed what Libya's critics called a human
rights scandal and advanced the long-isolated north African country's
efforts to normalize ties with the West.

'Sienna Miller's got no talent,' blasts Lindsay Lohan

(Daily Mail)
Updated: 2007-08-06 09:53

Lindsay Lohan has blasted Sienna Miller as a "no talent crackhead" while
claiming herself to be the "greatest actress in the world".

The troubled Hollywood star, who was arrested last month on drink-driving
and drug charges, also unleashes a torrent of abuse against fellow actors
Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightey.

The 21-year-old calls Johansson "fat and ugly" and Knightley is a "flat,
shallow, cardboard cutout of an actress," according to reports in the
National Enquirer.

Rivals? Lindsay Lohan has blasted Sienna Miller as a 'no talent crackhead'
according to reports in the National Enquirer

Lohan has a history of falling out with young female Hollywood stars -
from Hilary Duff to Paris Hilton - no actress seems to have been spared
her wrath.

She was due to work with Knightley earlier this year in Dylan Thomas
biopic, The Best Time Of Our Lives, but allegedly dropped out over
financial negotiations.

Miller stepped into the role at the last minute and developed a close
bond with Knightley.

?

According to Lohan, Keira is a 'cardboard cut of an actress',
while Johansson is 'ugly and fat'

Her feud with Johansson first surfaced last year when she co-starred with
the actress's ex-boyfriend, Jared Leto, in Chapter 27. She allegedly
scribbled obscenities about Johansson on the wall of a New York nightclub.

Lohan was arrested for investigation of misdemeanor driving under the
influence and with a suspended license, and felony cocaine possession.

Besides her personal troubles, Lohan is also struggling with her career.

Despite winning high praise for her performances in Bobby and Georgia
Rules, her latest film, I Know Who Killed Me, has been dismissed by
critics as one of the worst of the year.

New "Bourne" set to lead weekend box office

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-08-03 15:40

LOS ANGELES?- Jason Bourne, the amnesiac political assassin, should find
himself in familiar territory atop the North American box office this
weekend with "The Bourne Ultimatum," the third film in the spy saga.

Although Hollywood also is fielding three other wide releases and two
more modest platform launches, "Bourne" should outrun the competition and
force the previous weekend's chart-topper, "The Simpsons Movie," into
second place.

Universal Pictures' "Ultimatum," which takes the globe-trotting Bourne
(Matt Damon) to Tangier and New York, looks poised to hit the high-$50
million range, possibly even pushing into $60 million territory.

The first film in the series, "The Bourne Identity," opened to $27.1
million in 2002. "The Bourne Supremacy" bowed to $52.5 million three
summers ago. Both "Supremacy" and "Ultimatum" were directed by Paul
Greengrass.

20th Century Fox's "Simpsons," which bowed last weekend to a resounding
$74 million, will likely follow with a haul in the $33 million-$37
million range. The animated movie is expected to cross the century mark
Friday.

In a bid for the family audience, Walt Disney Pictures is unleashing
"Underdog," a live-action version of the 1960s cartoon series about a
canine superhero. It should open in the $11 million-$14 million range.

Paramount's "Hot Rod," in which breakout "Saturday Night Live" star Andy
Samberg makes his big-screen debut as an Evel Knievel wannabe, is
expected to race off with about $7 million-$10 million.

And then there's "Bratz: The Movie," a live-action tween comedy based on
the popular doll line. Handicappers will be surprised if the Lionsgate
release rises much higher than the $5 million mark in its first weekend.

Utilizing a more selective rollout, Picturehouse is raising the curtain
on the musical drama "El Cantante," a biopic about salsa singer Hector
Lavoe starring Marc Anthony. Jennifer Lopez, who is married to Anthony,
produced and also stars in the R-rated film, which should find favor
among Latino audiences as it debuts in 542 theaters.

Miramax Films also will introduce "Becoming Jane," a period romance in
which Jane Austen (Anne Hathaway) takes center stage. It will dance into
100 theaters.

On 25 screens, ThinkFilm is venturing out with the R-rated "The Ten," a
skit comedy built around outrageous infractions of the Ten Commandments.

Desperate Housewives star Marcia Cross has started taking her
five-month-old twins to work with her.

The 45-year-old actress - who plays up-tight red-head Bree Van De Kamp
Hodge in the Wisteria Lane drama - said: "I had them come with me last
week. I think if I have one full day [without them], then the next day
they have to come with me because I can't not see them for that long."

Cross gave birth to daughters Savannah and Eden in February and filmed
some of her season three scenes from her home while heavily pregnant with
the pair.

Actor Matt Damon, who stars as the amnesiac former assassin Jason Bourne
in the new film,
'The Bourne Ultimatum,' poses Saturday, July 21, 2007, in Los Angeles.[AP]

Frank Marshall won't rule out another sequel to the Jason Bourne films,
but says the story has already ventured far afield from Robert Ludlum's
novels.

"There might be an idea out there that we could go forward with, but
right now, the trilogy is done," Marshall said Monday at a screening of
"The Bourne Ultimatum."

Matt Damon, who stars as amnesiac assassin Jason Bourne, also attended
the screening, a fundraiser for the Boise Contemporary Theater. The event
was held at the Egyptian Theatre.

Marshall and Damon have attended screening events in Boise for each
Bourne movie. Marshall has local ties to Boise, and has held several
premieres in the city to benefit various causes.

Damon said he hoped future projects bring him back to Idaho.

"I'm hoping that a lot of people from the industry come to Idaho — the
mountains, the desert, the city, with everything that you have going for
you, more movies should be shot out here," the 36-year-old actor said.

"The Bourne Ultimatum" opens in theaters nationwide Friday.

Matt Damon: 'Lohan will bounce back'

Actor Matt Damon attends a ceremony where he is honored with a star
on the "Hollywood Walk of Fame" in Hollywood July 25, 2007.[Reuters]

Matt Damon believes troubled actress Lindsay Lohan will bounce back from
her recent drunk-driving arrest, declaring, "She's very talented."

The Mean Girls star was arrested for driving under the influence and
possession of cocaine in the early hours of Tuesday morning. She is
currently free on $25,000 bail and is seeking "medical care," according
to her lawyer.

Damon says, "I think there a lot of people who want to help her out, and
it's a very personal thing. Most people know someone in their lives
that's struggling with a disease like that, and the reality is you can
only support them and it's got to come from them--it's her choice
ultimately.

"I mean, look, she's very young, she's very talented; it's easy to look
from the outside and say, 'Oh, you have this big opportunity.'

"It's really hard to know that when you're in the middle of it, and to
see life from any other perspective other than your own--particularly
when you're that young. She's obviously hit a chord with people, because
people are so fascinated with her, so everybody's pulling for her, that's
for sure."

Britney Spears

Britney Spears sat back and watched as her Yorkshire terrier puppy pooped
on a $6,700 designer gown at a photo shoot for OK! magazine. "I wasn't in
the room but I was there to hear the upset shrieks of the stylist,"
editor-in-chief Sarah Ivens told The Associated Press in a phone
interview Wednesday.

"Her assistant dealt with it in the end, after being asked to take care
of it. They had to be asked to clear it up."

Spears also wiped grease on a designer dress, treating it like "a
napkin," took frequent trips to the bathroom — leaving the door open
— and complained that the high-end clothing put together for the July
19 fashion shoot weren't sexy, short or tight enough, the magazine said.

After about three hours, the 25-year-old singer bolted, walking away with
more than $14,000 of borrowed apparel, Ivens said.

"I've never seen anything like it," she said. "It's definitely the most
bizarre shoot I've ever been on."

Representatives for Spears had offered an exclusive interview that was
intended as career comeback for the singer, Ivens said.

"What actually transpired on the day was a shock to us and left me and
the whole crew feeling quite shocked and sad, really," she said.

OK! publicist Brian Strong said the magazine didn't publish the photos in
its latest issue because they "weren't up to standard."

A representative at Jive Records, Spears' record label, didn't
immediately return a phone call and e-mail seeking comment Wednesday.

"She needs to have a really strong team to advise her what to do, what
not to do," Ivens said. "And then, if she gets that, I'm sure she can
pull it around. It's all there. She's got talent. She just needs to get
her priorities straight, I think."

The?ideal summer resort

(china.citw2008)
Updated: 2007-07-24 14:32

Chengde Summer Resort, also called Chengde Out Palace or Rehe Xanadu, is
situated north of Hebei Province's Chengde downtown, 230 kilometers away
from Beijing. First built in the 42nd year (1703) of Emperor Kangxi's
reign of the Qing Dynasty, the resort cost about 90 years to construct,
covering 564 hectares. It is the largest imperial garden in China. While
in terms of climate, it is an ideal summer resort with an average
temperature of 24.5 degrees Celsius in the hottest part of July.

The resort is divided into two sections: the palace area and the scenic
area, the latter of which is subcategorized into Lake Zone, Plain Zone
and Mountain Zone.

Palace Area

Palaces in China conjure up pictures of majesty and splendor. Certainly
most palaces are just like that, but for sure you will have a different
view if you come to visit the palace in the Chengde Summer Resort. The
architectural style of the palace is very unique, and similar to the
residential houses in North China. Black bricks and gray tiles, rock
steps and the cute courtyard covered with old pine trees look peaceful
and elegant.

The area is located in the southern part of the resort, made up of the
Main Palace, Pine-Crane Hall, Pine Soughing Valley and East Palace. The
Main Palace is comprised of the Front Court and the Back Imperial
Bedroom. The main hall of the Front Court, all made of nanmu, was the
place where all important ceremonies were held during the Qing emperors'
stay in the summer resort. The Back Imperial Bedroom is comprised of
Yanbo Zhishuang Hall, where the emperors lived and dealt with state
affairs, and Yunshan Shengdi Tower, where the emperors and empresses
appreciated the beautiful scenery.

Retrieve the quietness

By Fei Lai (Shanghai Daily)
Updated: 2007-07-23 10:40

The customer is always right, says the "creative director" at AIAIA - it
is the fashion style she wants that matters most, not what the director
may think when on a buying expedition.

Not all fashion boutiques keep a high profile. AIAIA, taking its name
from an island in a Greek fairytale, is located quietly and neatly in a
tranquil two-story old house on Taiyuan Road.

"It is a kind of different atmosphere, unlike those in the center of town
which offer too much," says Miyuki Miyama, AIAIA's creative director.
"The private space here gives a 'private feeling' to every newcomer. It's
quieter, guests can pick up and try on clothes without being disturbed."

Purple walls, cozy sofa and warm lights, which in the Japanese owner's
eyes is good for creativity, give off a peaceful and elegant scent. With
a total of four showrooms, two on each floor, the store has a nice layout.

"On the first floor is the Tokyo-style zone, which is acceptable,
practical and easy to make, and a small room for discount clothes,"
Miyama says. "The upper floor displays unique designs from Europe, such
as England and France."

It is true that at the first step into the shop, the mostly
black-and-white series of Tokyo collection murmur the attractiveness that
these two fashionable colors always have. However, step upstairs, the
flavor of Europe swarms over the eyes. The diversity in colors and
designs brings guests into a world of sweet candy.

"Special items from each designer indicate different characters. The
unique clothes we sell are all works from international pioneering young
designers," Miyama says. "Big-name designers such as Anne Valerie Hash
and Matthew Williamson can be found among the European collections."

Although Hash is a young Paris designer, she has cooperated with many
luxurious brands. Wise, humorous and simple, her feminine designs do not
have so many colors but features smooth and fluent cuttings of lines.

Williamson is characterized by geographic patterns. "He is one of the
treasures for entertainment stars," Miyama commented.

State-owned companies make more money

(AP)
Updated: 2007-07-28 09:15

Profits at China's state-owned companies rose sharply in the first half
of this year, rising 31.5 percent to 753.5 billion yuan ($99.7 billion),
reports said on Friday.

Companies owned by the central government saw profits rise 20.2 percent
to 541.8 billion yuan ($71.7 billion), the Xinhua News Agency said,
citing the Finance Ministry. Profits at companies owned by lower-level
governments rose 36.5 percent to 211.7 billion yuan ($28 billion).

The government is trying to create an elite group of 30 to 50
national-level companies that are to be industry leaders in banking, oil
and other fields.

Hundreds of other companies have been shut down or spun off to fend for
themselves.

Private Chinese companies also have seen profits rise amid a boom that
saw the economy expand by 11.9 percent last quarter.

Anti-money laundering screws tightened

Anti-money laundering screws tightened

By Xin Zhiming (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-07-27 06:52

The central bank has directed insurance and securities institutions to
set up an anti-money laundering mechanism this year, and is likely to ask
some non-financial sectors to do the same.

"We need the insurance and securities sectors to set up an (internal) arm
and devise rules against money laundering this year," Tang Xu, head of
the anti-money laundering department of the People's Bank of China
(PBOC), the country's central bank, said during a live Internet
conference yesterday.

This is PBOC's latest move to intensify its fight against money
laundering. Earlier, it ordered the banking industry to devise a system
to monitor and report dubious money flow.

Some specific non-financial institutions such as law and accounting firms
and auction houses are the others that could be directed to set up
similar mechanisms, Tang said.

"We will study these sectors one by one and map out reporting and
inspection regimes for dubious transactions."

Securities and insurance companies will have to send data on dubious
deals to the anti-money laundering monitoring center of the central bank
from October 1, he said.

China intensified efforts to improve its anti-money laundering regime by
passing an anti-money laundering law late last year and issuing rules on
checking the possible flow of funds for terrorists last month.

It has joined hands with the Ministry of Public Security to set up a
network to check the identity of banks' customers. The system went into
force in late June, and all the country's banks have joined it, PBOC
deputy governor Su Ning told a press briefing yesterday.

If a bank official wants to check a customer's identity he just needs to
click a few times for the computerized image of his ID to pop up on the
screen, the PBOC official said.
