"Dove of peace" made of sapphires

www.chinanews.cn 2005-09-02 15:49:48

Sun Sigao, a resident of Wutu Town in Shandong's Weifang, was displaying
a dove he just finished with sapphires on Aug. 31st. In order to
commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the United
Nations, Sun spent three months and used 2,005 sapphires to make a "dove
of world peace". The dove is 21 centimeters in length, symbolizing the
21st century, 13 centimeters in height, symbolizing 1.3 billion Chinese
people, and 5,600 carats in weight, meaning 56 Chinese ethnic groups.
Reputed as "home of sapphires", Weifang's Wutu Town is one of the few
large sapphire mines in the world.
